Biography

American government office building, known at the time it was build as the largest office building in the world. It was dedicated at this time.

On 9/11/2001, the U.S. was struck by terrorists with two aircraft striking the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City. Within the hour, at 9:45 AM EST, an aircraft aimed at the White House aborted its mission and crashed into the Pentagon, killing more than 600 people.

Meira B. Epstein, C.A. NCGR, New York City adds the following history.

The Pentagon as a building, institution, and symbol was conceived at the request of Brigadier General Brehon B. Sommervell, Chief of the Construction Division of the Office of the Quartermaster General, on a weekend in mid-July 1941. The purpose was to provide a temporary solution to the War Department's critical shortage of space.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 9/11/1941. The building was dedicated on 1/15/1943, nearly 16 months to the day after the groundbreaking. The first occupants move in 4/29/1942 though construction was completed 1/15/1943.
